Our Learning in Grade 1 & 2 Montessori

It has been a busy and meaningful time of learning in our Grade 1 & 2 Montessori classroom!

We continue to celebrate students taking ownership of their learning by guiding lessons, sharing materials, and presenting their own stories and art activities. In the Montessori environment, students learn not only from their teachers but also from and with one another, inspiring their classmates through their creativity, confidence, and willingness to share. A few students have been inspired to create and share their own books, including The 29-Story Treehouse and Family Separate Day. These experiences nurture independence, confidence, creativity, and a strong classroom community, while showing how one student’s ideas can inspire another. Ask me about their wonderful creations!

Language Arts: Students have been strengthening their phonics and word-building skills by using the materials such as the Montessori Moveable Alphabet to build and explore words. Grade 2 students have also been exploring alliteration as an enrichment activity, creating interesting sentences by choosing words that begin with the same sound.

We created some sentences together:

Mathematics: We have been exploring patterns in numbers, including identifying, extending, and creating patterns. Students have also been collecting classroom data and representing their findings using tally marks and graphs, developing their ability to organize, interpret, and communicate information.

Social Studies & Language Arts – Terry Fox: Through learning about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, we discussed qualities that make someone inspiring. Together, we brainstormed powerful words to describe Terry, such as courageous, determined, kind, brave, strong, hopeful, and inspiring. Students are beginning to connect these words to their own understanding of citizenship, community, perseverance, and making a difference.

Library Visit

We visited our school library and each student brought home two books to enjoy and explore. Students will have the opportunity to exchange their books for new ones as they finish reading, encouraging a love of reading and helping them discover a variety of books and authors.
