From the office

Hello Families,

Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day.  In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in

The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.

November 1st will be the Spirit Day chosen by rooms 10 and 12. We will be having a pajama day. All staff and students are invited to wear their comfy pjs for the day.

Card Games Club

Card Games club is back! There was an information meeting at 11:40am on Monday, October 24, for students who were interested in joining. This year, we will alternate weekly between a Grade 1-2 group and a Grade 3-6 group. The first official Grade 1-2 meeting will be Nov. 7, and then the Grade 3-6 group’s first meeting will be on Nov. 14, and so on until February.  Please allow your kids to store their cards in their cubbies (ONLY on their card club day), as there have been some backpack-break-ins in the past.

Ordering Lunches

Once vendors are confirmed they will be added to the calendar for your selection.  You can order as little or many days as you like. You can place orders for multiple days and multiple children all at once and pay at the end.  Or you can place orders weekly.  Payment is done online through Healthy Hunger, no payments are made to school.

Deadline for ordering is 5 days in advance.  So all orders must be placed by that time. So for Thursday meals, orders must be placed by 11:59pm on Saturday. In order to give the vendors time to order and prep.

If you need to cancel a lunch you can do that until the cut-off period which is 5 days before each lunch and get a refund. However with more absences due to symptoms cancelling in advance may not always be an option.

Lunch Delivery

On the specified day lunch is delivered to the school for the students.  We will require a few volunteers to help distribute to the class, so please make sure you are on our volunteer contact list if you would like to help. This is only for the lunch orders so please remember to pack a snack and water with them for the rest of the day.  Or a complete lunch if you did not order that day.

Missed Fun Lunches

For those times you miss the option to cancel, and your child won’t be there due to sickness or any other reason, we ask that you please contact the school by 11:30am on the day of Fun Lunch to choose an option. Your options are to:

  • Pick the lunch up by the end of the day.
  • Send it home with a sibling.
  • Donate it to the staff room.

Unfortunately due to allergies etc. we can’t give to another child without their guardian’s consent. Any lunches that aren’t claimed by the end of the day will be composted.

Math
We have begun exploring quantities in a variety of ways including numerals, pictures, base 10 and 10 frames. Grade 1s are working within numbers to 100 and Grade 2s are working within numbers to 1000. Our learning will continue over the next couple of weeks, challenging us to represent numbers in even more ways - number lines, expanded form, number bonds and more! These are some of the Montessori Materials we have explored so far - more pictures to come :)

Language Arts
We are almost done learning all of the letters in the alphabet! This week we focused on letters R, N,G,D,O,B, and G. In our journals, we practiced brainstorming words, drawing pictures and fearless spelling! We also started using some new Montessori materials, focusing on language, that we can use during Daily LA and as a Responsible Work Choices. Ask your child about the materials they like to use and/or the actions we have learned for each of the letters so far!

Social Studies
As part of our Social Studies curriculum, students will be exploring their sense of identity within their different communities. To start this work, we will be sharing about ourselves and our ancestors. Thank you for taking the time to fill out the Questionnaire with your child. We are all so excited to learn more about ourselves and each other in Room 10.

Science
Oh, happy Fall! We have been SO lucky for this amazing, sunny and warm start of the school year. After listening to the story Leaf Man we were inspired to create our own Leaf Creature. They gathered leaves, sticks and a variety of other loose parts from nature to create an individual leaf creature. They used a graphic organizer with frame sentences to write about their leaf creature. Ask me about my work.

Have a great weekend!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Green

Hello Families

Happy October Families,

It has been a wonderful warm start to fall. For this reason we have been enjoying our time outside  for Physical Education using the parachute, frisbees, skipping ropes as well as playing/learning cooperative games.

We have been learning new math games to support our investigation of number and place value of numbers:

Daily L.A
Our study of letters and their corresponding sound continues. Students are working at their level using the sounds they hear to create words and/or simple/super sentences. Ask me about the difference between a simple sentence or a super sentence. Ask me to spell my name without the vowels.

Conventions
We use the below strategy to help us remember to leave spaces between our words. That way, when read the message we are able to communicate understanding to our intended audience.

Artist in Residence
During our first session we investigated books by Peter H. Reynolds. We noticed how he used line and color in his art. We used beets and marigolds to paint. Look at our work below:

We are looking to have volunteers come into the classroom. If you have your police clearance and would like to come in please email Mrs. Green.
Please send a set of headphones in with your to use on occasion throughout the day.
