Hello Families,
I can't believe we're in the single digit-countdown for weeks of school left - only 9 and we have a lot to learn still!
This week in math, students were really excited to start learning about fractions. Fractions are a new concept for grade 1 and 2 students as it was not taught until grade 3 in the old curriculum. If students in grade 1 are showing a strong understanding of halves, they will have the opportunity to explore fractions further alongside the grade 2s! We started with a pre-assessment and learned about equal and unequal parts. Students then began learning about numerators and denominators. We continue to work on addition and subtraction as well.
In science we investigated objects that float and sink. We This week we will begin learning about buoyancy. tested these items: oil, shell, rock, popsicle stick, cork, pipe cleaner, paper clip, crayon, Lego and a plastic spoon.
