Boat materials - May 2 ,2023

Hello Families,

I can't believe we're in the single digit-countdown for weeks of school left - only 9 and we have a lot to learn still!

This week in math, students were really excited to start learning about fractions. Fractions are a new concept for grade 1 and 2 students as it was not taught until grade 3 in the old curriculum. If students in grade 1 are showing a strong understanding of halves, they will have the opportunity to explore fractions further alongside the grade 2s!  We started with a pre-assessment and learned about equal and unequal parts. Students then began learning about numerators and denominators. We continue to work on addition and subtraction as well.

During our morning task, students continue to work on identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives.

In literacy this week we have been talking about r-controlled vowels. We reviewed the "ar" sound with our Animated Literacy character Arnie Ardvark and will be talking about the "or" sound with Orty Orsen. Next week we will continue learning about er, ir, and ur which are a bit trickier because they all sound the same!

In science we investigated objects that float and sink. We This week we will begin learning about buoyancy. tested these items: oil, shell, rock, popsicle stick, cork, pipe cleaner, paper clip, crayon, Lego and a plastic spoon.

Upcoming Building Project

Next week, students will be designing and building a boat. Start collecting items that you think would work well for boat building - we will be designing on Monday May 8 and building on Tuesday May 9!

In math we are learning subtraction strategies.

What is Subtraction? What are some subtraction words that you already know? Are subtraction and addition alike?

Liliana - 100 minus 1 equals 99 it can make any numbers….

Alysa - they are alike because 18 minus 9 equal 9 and 9 plus 9 equal 18.

Brantley -minus, if you didn’t have minus your numbers would not be lower

Coleton -14 add 14 equals 18 equals 12

Rohan - numbers are smaller

Wynne- Taking numbers away

Quinn - numbers get smaller

Kade -  less than

Ewa -numbers become smaller

Hello Families

 Hello Families,

During math we have been adding numbers up to 20, 50 and 100. Students chose a budget and had to purchase at lease 10 items and add the amount together to come up with their total or close to their total.

At home students can create their own budget and grocery list too.

During daily L.A we continue to use Nouns, verbs and adjectives to create super sentences and add more detail to our writing. We have introduced the Montessori Grammar material to identify parts of speech in our writing.

Ask me about my writing...

Would your rather live in a treehouse or a boat? Why?

In social studies we have been talking about communities we belong to.

We look forward to visiting our sit spot after spring to observe all the changes that Spring brings to us and Mother Earth.`

These are a few samples of some Leprechaun traps...

We wish all of the families a very happy Spring Break. Classes resume Monday April 3.
